Seven Jewish Children: A Play for Gaza is Caryl Churchill’s response to the 2008-2009 Israel military strike on Gaza, and first performed at London’s Royal Court Theatre on 6 February 2009. Churchill, a patron of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, has said that anyone wishing to produce it may do so gratis, so long as they hold a collection for the people of Gaza at the end.

The play consists of seven scenes spread over roughly seventy years, describing certain events in recent Jewish history that the play alludes to only indirectly : The Holocaust, Jewish immigration to Palestine, the creation of Israel, the flight or expulsion of Palestinian Arabs, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the dispute over water, the First Intifada, the building of the West Bank barrier, Palestinian suicide attacks, Hamas rocket attacks, and the 2008 bombing of Gaza.

The next three videos are the Lebanese American University’s student production of this play, followed by the full text of the play which was provided via the http://www.guardian.co.uk. At the end of the text, you can download the text in PDF format and find information on how to produce the play free of charge as long as you charge no admission and set up a collection for medical aid for Palestinians.

Seven Jewish Children – a Play for Gaza

Caryl Churchill

No children appear in the play. The speakers are adults, the parents and if you like other relations of the children. The lines can be shared out in any way you like among those characters. The characters are different in each small scene as the time and child are different.

Reading & Researching: Hamas

Posted: January 17th, 2010 | Author: Moonstar Silverwolf | Filed under: International Relations, university | Tags: , , , , | View Comments

“The rise of Hamas to power through a democratic process is an unprecedented phenomenon in the Arab Muslim countries and thus deserves the attention of students of Islamic and Middle East politics.” (source: The Palestinian Hamas by Mishal & Sela pg xxviii)

The above quote is from the preface of a book I’m starting to read. It’s actually a book that was on the required list of textbooks to buy for another course in my Masters program, but I wasn’t able to take the course due to a conflict in my schedule. But, the course I’m taking sounds just as interesting and I’m sure I can tie some of the stuff from the other course to it.

Why am I reading about Hamas? Well, as part of my course, I have to write a research paper which will ultimately end up being 40% of my grade. Since the course just started, I do not want to narrow down my topic to a specific idea, but I know my paper will focus on something within the middle east. It will likely center on Israel’s occupation of Palestine and I figured Hamas has a big role to play in this, so I might as well get a head start on the research. (Yes, I’m this nerdy)

But, it’s amazing how just reading the prefaces of this book I have large questions (there were two prefaces to this book since it was originally published in 2000 and they did a second edition following the elections in 2006). Questions that relate to the US role in the blockade of Gaza following the elections. Why the US is so set on claiming this resistance group is a terrorist organization, especially following their wins in a democratic process, yet the US will back a government that also participated in violence, which is full of corruption (Fatah). And, how does Hamas break free from this label to become the resistance leader of the Palestinian movement not just in the eyes of those who have elected them, but also within the international community. And, is their stronger stance on Israel the one more likely to succeed given the climate following their election wins as the West Bank slowly becomes broken apart by Israeli settlements? What does the aftermath of Operation Cast Lead have on the whole political situation?

I plan to continue to blog about my research, my class and my thoughts related to this, it should be a fun journey.

Earthquake Hides the Cracks of Hypocrisy

Haiti Earthquake

A major destruction caused by an earthquake has caused an humanitarian situation and has brought the world together to help those in need. Donations through cell phones, non-profit organizations and governments have been pouring in. Nations have sent military and medical aid to help secure and get the needed supplies, food and water into the places where it is needed. People are helping move rubble away to get survivors out, and mass graves have been set up in order to handle the number of casualties. This has been a quick response and all of those who have been helping, donating and providing assistance should be commended. The United States has been a big pusher of a lot of this, the US news media has basically become a 24 hour ad like the ones you see asking for donations to help the orphaned children. Israel has been a big medical supplier and it has not gone unnoticed by the media either.

But, what happened during these disasters?

Gaza 2009 – Operation Cast Lead – Military Offensive – killed 1400 people, massive humanitarian disaster, continued prison. Cause: Israeli Military – US Weapons.

gaza_destruction

Afghanistan 2001-2010 – Military Offensive – killed millions, massive humanitarian disaster, continued occupation. Cause: US Military – US Weapons.

afghan

Iraq 2003-2010 – Military Offensive – killed millions, massive humanitarian disaster, continued occupation. Cause: US Military – US Weapons.

iraq

Where is the media, the donations, the outrage & support for the people of Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq? Why are we giving the US & Israel applause for helping in Haiti while they are continuing to destroy, occupy and murder millions half a world away? Why are we applauding George W. Bush and putting his name on a donation fund to help Haiti when he should be arrested for war crimes related to torture, invasion of a sovereign nation, use of white phosphorous & targeting civilians in two occupied lands?

My prayers and love go out to all of those within Haiti and I’m thankful so many people are donating money & time and anything else they can give. I’m glad we have leaders standing up and saying this is important to support. I’m glad President Obama is bringing people together in this tragedy. But, once this tragedy is no longer “news”, will we forget these same men and women are supporting the mass destruction of land & people.

We cannot stop natural disasters and we should all join together to help those in need. But we can stop man made disasters.

I would like to challenge the United States & Israel and all of those living within these two nations to do more to help deal with humanitarian needs & stop being the destruction force that causes the humanitarian need.

We are not hated for our freedoms or our wealth. We are hated because we occupy & destroy another land, murder & rape their citizens & fail to understand what we did wrong.

End the Occupation

Dr. Dahlia Wasfi explains what life is like in Iraq under U.S. occupation. What she discribes can easily be transferred to both Palestine & Afghanistan. It is time for all US Citizens to stand up and tell our elected officials that we need to end our foreign policy that leads us to occupy nations indefinitely. No longer can we accept that our military will remain in a country following our invasion. No longer shall we accept that invasion is acceptable. No longer shall we continue our imperialistic ways and finally allow ourselves a chance to “nation build” on our own soil. Stop sending billions of dollars to nations to murder, rape & torture them, occupy their lands or support the occupation of their land.

Are we the land of the free or are we not?

Below her 2007 speech at the Socialism Conference held in Chicago you will find the music & lyrics to “End the Occupation” by Muslim rapper Abu Nurah.

End the Occupation
by Abu Nurah

Lyrics:
Afghanistan, Iraq, and Palestine end the occupation now is the time (2x)

it’s essential for a people to govern their own affairs
and return to the land of which they’re rightful heirs
living in exile is like life suspended
for people back home the misery never ended
those who resist are accused of terrorism
for refusing to accept conditions worse than a prison
to the world, much of the suffering is invisible
mountains of evidence held to be inadmissible
occupations dehumanize populations
their strongest supporters are the world’s wealthy nations

Afghanistan, Iraq, and Palestine end the occupation now is the time (3x)

it’s the women and children who suffer most from occupation
their stories should be broadcast on every U.S. station
maybe then the people would push the administration
to suspend the billions we give the Israeli nation
and maybe one day mothers could breathe a sigh of relief
and their hearts begin to heal from the decades of grief
enough of roadmaps and Israel’s iron fist
the immoral state of affairs must cease to exist
how do you explain a 3-year-old shot in the head
or an 80-year-old being crushed to death in his bed
bishop Tutu has said that Palestine is a replica
of what Blacks had to endure in apartheid South Africa
many see the connection, others choose to ignore it
they say no to divestment but back then they were for it

Afghanistan, Iraq, and Palestine
end the occupation now is the time (3x)

Iraq was invaded against the will of the people
and now the same clique is trying to bring us a sequel
human rights to the rulers are just meaningless words
they don’t care about the Americans and much less the Kurds
war means profit and power for the corporate elite
contractors looted Iraq and they weren’t even discreet
just like pimps in the night and the soldiers their hookers
along with perverted patriots and the curious onlookers
Falluja was no mistake nor Abu Ghraib and Haditha
human life gets no respect recall the song by Aretha
if it were animals being abused in a cage
the mainstream media by now would have the world in a rage
but it’s only human mothers and daughters
so the corporate networks make sure nobody bothers
images of the carnage are considered in poor taste
the masses are blind as blood rivers flood to the waist

Afghanistan, Iraq, and Palestine
end the occupation now is the time (3x)
