7 Jewish Children, a play for Gaza

Seven Jewish Children: A Play for Gaza is Caryl Churchill’s response to the 2008-2009 Israel military strike on Gaza, and first performed at London’s Royal Court Theatre on 6 February 2009. Churchill, a patron of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, has said that anyone wishing to produce it may do so gratis, so long as they hold a collection for the people of Gaza at the end.

The play consists of seven scenes spread over roughly seventy years, describing certain events in recent Jewish history that the play alludes to only indirectly : The Holocaust, Jewish immigration to Palestine, the creation of Israel, the flight or expulsion of Palestinian Arabs, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the dispute over water, the First Intifada, the building of the West Bank barrier, Palestinian suicide attacks, Hamas rocket attacks, and the 2008 bombing of Gaza.

The next three videos are the Lebanese American University’s student production of this play, followed by the full text of the play which was provided via the http://www.guardian.co.uk. At the end of the text, you can download the text in PDF format and find information on how to produce the play free of charge as long as you charge no admission and set up a collection for medical aid for Palestinians.

Seven Jewish Children – a Play for Gaza

Caryl Churchill

No children appear in the play. The speakers are adults, the parents and if you like other relations of the children. The lines can be shared out in any way you like among those characters. The characters are different in each small scene as the time and child are different.

Earthquake Hides the Cracks of Hypocrisy

Haiti Earthquake

A major destruction caused by an earthquake has caused an humanitarian situation and has brought the world together to help those in need. Donations through cell phones, non-profit organizations and governments have been pouring in. Nations have sent military and medical aid to help secure and get the needed supplies, food and water into the places where it is needed. People are helping move rubble away to get survivors out, and mass graves have been set up in order to handle the number of casualties. This has been a quick response and all of those who have been helping, donating and providing assistance should be commended. The United States has been a big pusher of a lot of this, the US news media has basically become a 24 hour ad like the ones you see asking for donations to help the orphaned children. Israel has been a big medical supplier and it has not gone unnoticed by the media either.

But, what happened during these disasters?

Gaza 2009 – Operation Cast Lead – Military Offensive – killed 1400 people, massive humanitarian disaster, continued prison. Cause: Israeli Military – US Weapons.

gaza_destruction

Afghanistan 2001-2010 – Military Offensive – killed millions, massive humanitarian disaster, continued occupation. Cause: US Military – US Weapons.

afghan

Iraq 2003-2010 – Military Offensive – killed millions, massive humanitarian disaster, continued occupation. Cause: US Military – US Weapons.

iraq

Where is the media, the donations, the outrage & support for the people of Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq? Why are we giving the US & Israel applause for helping in Haiti while they are continuing to destroy, occupy and murder millions half a world away? Why are we applauding George W. Bush and putting his name on a donation fund to help Haiti when he should be arrested for war crimes related to torture, invasion of a sovereign nation, use of white phosphorous & targeting civilians in two occupied lands?

My prayers and love go out to all of those within Haiti and I’m thankful so many people are donating money & time and anything else they can give. I’m glad we have leaders standing up and saying this is important to support. I’m glad President Obama is bringing people together in this tragedy. But, once this tragedy is no longer “news”, will we forget these same men and women are supporting the mass destruction of land & people.

We cannot stop natural disasters and we should all join together to help those in need. But we can stop man made disasters.

I would like to challenge the United States & Israel and all of those living within these two nations to do more to help deal with humanitarian needs & stop being the destruction force that causes the humanitarian need.

We are not hated for our freedoms or our wealth. We are hated because we occupy & destroy another land, murder & rape their citizens & fail to understand what we did wrong.

Participating in a Rally for Gaza in Atlanta #GFM

Posted: December 29th, 2009 | Author: Moonstar Silverwolf | Filed under: Gaza, Palestine | Tags: , , , , | View Comments

After approximately 400 miles and about 7 hours of driving round trip, I was successful in participating in my first ever protest in my young life. Until this year, I have not desired to be active in this type of thing, but there is something about the people of Palestine that make me want to speak out. My voice today was raised for Palestine, the people of Gaza and the activists participating in the Gaza Freedom March & VivaPalestina who are being denied entry by the Egyptian Government into Gaza to deliver medicine, supplies & support.

Unfortunately, I live in a very inactive area, which disappointments me. So, I have been trying to find events or groups who are in a larger area, which includes the Metro of Atlanta, Georgia. Well, a day or so ago, I discovered such a group in Atlanta that was having a rally and I made the decision that I have waited long enough, I have to do something. So, today, I got into my car, drive over 3 hours to Atlanta, participated in a rally in front of the Israeli Consulate.

The rally was fun, I met a few very cool people and will likely join them again in the future. My only complaint is how far away it is and the long drive took some of the excitement out of it. We did have some excitement with some cops, however. After we started to gather, I’m assuming someone informed the police and a cop car came by and started to keep watch of us. They were eventually joined by two other cars who would remain the rest of the rally. Two male members decided to challenge the police and walked with their banner into the street, blocking the entire street. They would be taken away to where I assume they were eventually written tickets and released, but I do not know what they were charged with. My assumption is the police treated them harsher than needed to send a warning to the rest of us, but I knew what was legal and what I should not do to avoid problems.

The rally was filled with all sorts of people. There were young and old ranging from what I assume was about 8-10 all the way up to roughly 70-80s (maybe?) There were members of many different races, although those who were Arab were more aggressive in their chants. There were women wearing hijabs, people who looked like they had wealth and some who were more poor. I learned one guy was on parole, so he was trying to avoid the police because he only had one more week left.

Near the end, we all gathered across the street from the Consulate, had some candles lit and we formed a circle, discussed the events that happened a year ago and had a moment of silence for the 1400 who were massacred.

This rally was organized by Movement to End Israeli Apartheid (MEIA-GA): http://www.meiag.org/ or on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/#/group.php?v=wall&gid=124432515516

I took a few pictures with my cell phone and captured a few seconds of video as well. There were others taking pictures and I’m sure they will turn up online as well. Above us at one point was a helicopter, though I do not know if it was a media one, but I’m going to assume it was just so I can feel better about it.

Here are a few pictures I wanted to share from the evening:

US State Department responds to my email regarding #GFM

A few days ago, I sent an email to the US State Department regarding the aggressive actions that the Egyptian Government was doing with the non-violent groups – Gaza Freedom March & VivaPalestina. I expressed my concern for their safety as well as informed them why I thought this was something they should address their citizens currently facing police harassment, lock down & silencing. I expressed my concern that their medical and food aide would not make it to those who need it in Gaza. Here is their response to me:

No where did they address my concerns and all they sent back to me was talking points that I pretty much memorized already. The website is outdated as well. But, at least they are taking my concern into consideration, perhaps a silver-lining in the mix, but I’m not about to hold my breathe on this one.
