Seven Jewish Children: A Play for Gaza is Caryl Churchill’s response to the 2008-2009 Israel military strike on Gaza, and first performed at London’s Royal Court Theatre on 6 February 2009. Churchill, a patron of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, has said that anyone wishing to produce it may do so gratis, so long as they hold a collection for the people of Gaza at the end.

The play consists of seven scenes spread over roughly seventy years, describing certain events in recent Jewish history that the play alludes to only indirectly : The Holocaust, Jewish immigration to Palestine, the creation of Israel, the flight or expulsion of Palestinian Arabs, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the dispute over water, the First Intifada, the building of the West Bank barrier, Palestinian suicide attacks, Hamas rocket attacks, and the 2008 bombing of Gaza.

The next three videos are the Lebanese American University’s student production of this play, followed by the full text of the play which was provided via the http://www.guardian.co.uk. At the end of the text, you can download the text in PDF format and find information on how to produce the play free of charge as long as you charge no admission and set up a collection for medical aid for Palestinians.

Seven Jewish Children – a Play for Gaza

Caryl Churchill

No children appear in the play. The speakers are adults, the parents and if you like other relations of the children. The lines can be shared out in any way you like among those characters. The characters are different in each small scene as the time and child are different.

Excuse me, Mr. President, you didn’t answer my question..

Laila Abdelaziz did a good thing to ask the President this question. I have continued to be disappointed with President Obama regarding his foreign policy. This response given by the President shows how slanted the US policy is.

President Obama will fail to bring peace in the region for a number of reasons, this includes but is not limited to the following:

There is no pressure on congress to pull funding on Israel
There is no incentive placed on the table for Israel to stop settlements.
No one is communicating with Hamas – a strong political and social group within Palestine
    Abbas & Fatah are corrupt.

A two-state solution must include Hamas in negotiations; It must include consequences to Israel.

In reality – it is appearing more and more that the real solution is a one state solution, but that won’t give the US propaganda to bring home to say – we “freed” the Palestinians.

I’d like to challenge everyone to attend town hall meetings of your elective officials and ask this pointed & direct question. Then, when they refuse to answer the question or side step it – let your vote do the talking. If you don’t like the opposing party – choose someone else, a third party or write in candidate. The only way our leaders get the message is to send it to them where it counts.

President Obama – why do we not hold Israel accountable for their crimes. Why do we not condemn their actions? Why do we not acknowledge that Israel is an apartheid. Israel is not a democracy, it is a borderline theocracy.

What has Israel done for the US that warrants blanket forgiveness for their sins?
Why do you support the massacre & genocide of a race of people, trapping them in death camps?

Answer these questions, Mr. President.

End the Siege of Gaza #gaza

1-2221A year ago today, November 5th, 2008 – The Israeli military entered the Gaza Strip ending a four month cease-fire between Hamas & Israel. This raid into Gaza resulted in the death of six Palestinians. Hamas responded with rockets into southern Israel which caused no injuries.

To understand this conflict a little bit more, let’s remind ourselves that the US and Israel both consider Hamas a terrorist organization for things they did many years ago which they have not done in years. Hamas, while still an armed militia group, has worked with the political system to become the elected control of Gaza. Following Hamas’ control of Gaza, Israel closed off the 1.5 million residents of Gaza, restricting all travel & supplies going into and out of the land. The people of Gaza have been sent into further poverty and struggle just to find enough clean water and food to survive. Their fisher boats are harassed, sometimes even shot at by live ammunition and the people of Gaza are left to die without the man made tunnels they have dug between Gaza and Egypt in which they use to smuggle food, livestock, building supplies and weapons. This blockade on Gaza and the humanitarian crisis it puts the people into is a direct violation to the Geneva Conventions and puts Israel at risk for war crimes.

holocaust1_victim_gaza Late in 2008, Israel would begin “Operation Cast Lead” which Israel deemed a necessary fight to rid Gaza of Hamas and defend Israel from rocket fire. For 22 straight days, US made and purchased military weapons fell onto Gaza causing destruction and further humanitarian problems. As reported recently by the UN sponsored “Goldstone” report, it is clear that Israel violated the international laws of war, targeting civilians, schools & hospitals. Bulldozing land, killing livestock, destroying a sewage treatment plant & cutting the people off from clean water or supplies to rebuild. Furthermore, there is evidence that Israel used illegal weapons such as depleted Uranium which burns the skin causing serve pain and suffering.

ittihad_news-5 Israel continues to refuse to support any investigation into how it conducted this operation. And, the United States continues to support Israel. You, as a citizen of the United States are responsible for these acts just as much as the solider who pulled the trigger because your leaders continue to support Israel without question. You, America – you are allowing these people to starve, to die, to suffer.

Will you continue to be silent? Or will you choose to voice your concern, rising up in opposition?

Goldstone Interviewed by Bill Moyer

Goldstone talks about his report on PBS’ Bill Moyer Journal. His report on the events surrounding “Operation Cast Lead” in Gaza condemns both Hamas and Israel suggesting that war crimes have been committed. The language is rather harsh on Israel. In a three part video, the first part Goldstone discusses why he being a Zionist Jew shouldn’t have anything to do with why he should or shouldn’t do this investigation. He states that he supports Israel’s right to defend itself against any Hamas rockets and that the military offensive in Gaza is a justified response. The reason his report his damning, he says, is because despite the justified response, Israel deliberately used excess force, targeted civilian site and left a humanitarian crisis, all of these are considered war crimes under current international laws.

Below is part two of the video where he discusses Israel’s excessiveness. To see part one & three, go to the youtube page: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPOt4MU8cuk

Olmert Protests & Academic Debate

Posted: October 24th, 2009 | Author: Moonstar Silverwolf | Filed under: Gaza, Israel, War Crimes | Tags: , , , , , , | View Comments

The Electronic Intifada’s Ali Abunimah explains why he interrupted former Israeli Prime Minister, Olmert’s speech at the University of Chicago in a recent post. I found that his entry was well thought out, explaining why he normally would not interrupt a speaker at an event so that he wouldn’t stifle the academic necessarily that a free debate within the University requires. He then went on to explain why this was different.

In their 20 October email to the University of Chicago community, President Robert Zimmer and Provost Thomas Rosenbaum condemned the “disruptions” during Olmert’s speech. “Any stifling of debate,” they wrote, “runs counter to the primary values of the University of Chicago and to our long-standing position as an exemplar of academic freedom.”

Was it in order to promote debate that the University insisted on pre-screening questions and imposed a recording ban for students and media? In the name of promoting debate, will the University now invite Hamas leader Khaled Meshal — perhaps by video link — to lecture on leadership to its students, and offer him a large honorarium? Can we soon expect Sudan’s President Omar Bashir to make an appearance at Mandel Hall?

(source)

As a university professor, I also see the importance of free debate and even posted an entry a few days ago related to it and normally I would say that causing an interruption such as this is not helping the cause of free debate. However, I doubt the University of Chicago or any US University would be willing to break away from common thought and bring in the opposing views to Israel such as Hamas’ leader. And, the fact that there was heavy security, pre-screened questions & recording devices banned from the event – this was not an academic debate – this was a political propaganda speech.

I commend Ali Abunimah for standing up for the rights of the people of Palestine, the rights of the international community & the rights of all humans around the world.

I would also like to say to University of Chicago’s President Robert Zimmer and Provost Thomas Rosenbaum – your debate was not a debate. It was a complete show & you know it. If you expect the young and educated to believe you have their best interest, you would not host someone who committed mass murder on two nations of people without having accountability to their action. Allow your students to fully engage your guests if they are controversial.

Only those who fear the truth are not willing to answer for it.
