large_12071_89170Protesters have taken to the streets in Afghanistan over an allegation that US troops set fire to a Qur’an during an operation against Taliban militants in the province of Wardak in southern Kabul. Some of the protesters carried anti-US signs, some burned a US flag and they even set fire an effigy of US President Barack Obama.

US officials deny that their forces did such a thing. “We did not burn a Qur’an … It is unfortunate that the protesters believe a Taliban rumor,” Captain Elizabeth Mathias said, adding an investigation had been carried out.

The Taliban has not commented on the incident.

Whether this is true or not, it only shows a growing distrust of US forces within Afghanistan. Public opinion in the US shows that the war is not one we want to continue fighting. There is growing evidence that Afghanistan doesn’t want us within their country either. If both sides do not want us to have troops in the country – so why are we still there?

But part of me expects this rumor to be true. I mean, take a look at our history within Afghanistan and Iraq. We have tortured people, we have murdered innocent people, we have raped women, we have danced naked around a campfire drinking beer.. and there are many more examples. Is it really out of the US character not to have done this? And you ask yourself why these protesters believe this action to be true whether or not it was a rumor started by the Taliban?

Seriously, why are we fighting a war in Afghanistan? We went there as an act of revenge for those who committed acts of violence on 9-11. Since then, we have done nothing but destroy a civilization that now resents us more. I seriously want to know the justification for continuing to send our troops, to continue to spend money on fighting, killing and murdering people in a foreign country that wants nothing to do with us. There is growing tension between US forces and Afghanistan forces and all it is doing is fueling the hatred towards the US.

Al-Qeada has already defeated us on numerous fronts and we are too blind to recognize we will continue to lose this fight. We are seen as occupiers. We are seen as terrorists. And we destroyed our own laws of freedom because of 9-11. Al-Qeada only killed 3000 people and destroyed a few buildings, but they beat us because we destroyed ourselves.
